PERUMIN 36: International Meeting Will Analyze Global Use of Critical Minerals

The International Meeting at PERUMIN 36, an event presided over by Angela Grossheim, features two discussion pillars this year: innovation and sustainability in the context of the global mining industry’s advancements, as well as the trends in relevant topics impacting the sector, including the energy transition, which increases the demand for critical minerals.

Peru produces 8 out of the 17 critical minerals for the global energy transition: copper, iron, lead, molybdenum, silver, zinc, indium, and graphite. These are referred to as critical elements due to their economic importance, but they also carry the risk of scarcity due to supply constraints or depletion. Therefore, it is necessary to use them adequately to ensure a stable supply of these minerals for years to come.

During the session on critical minerals and rare earths, Tomas Cabanillas, deputy director of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Canada, will analyze Canada's approach to the topic. Additionally, Michael Schmidt, senior analyst and researcher at the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA), will also explore the demand and supply projections for the coming years. Finally, Julian Kettle, senior vice president of Metals and Mining at Wood Mackenzie, will analyze the participation of key mining countries such as Peru and Chile.

It is worth mentioning that the International Meeting will also address other globally significant topics in a series of conferences organized with the support of professionals from Australia, Canada, the UK, Germany, and Switzerland, ensuring the participation of national and international speakers and panelists.

“On the first day, we will delve into critical minerals, lithium, green hydrogen, and the circular economy. On the second day, we will have the opportunity to discuss how to generate development in mining regions, the approach to the development of mining clusters based on international experiences, and the approach to due diligence guidelines in human rights of various entities," explained the president of the International Meeting.

This event will take place in the afternoons of September 26 and 27 in the Herbert del Carpio room at PERUMIN 36. It will feature the valuable participation of Canada, PERUMIN’s partner country for this edition. Canada will be represented by Louis Marcotte, Ambassador of Canada to Peru and Bolivia, along with Canadian professionals who are part of the program.

PERUMIN 36
