Gabriel Castillo Devoto

Dr. Gabriel Castillo is a senior sustainability scientist and executive manager with over 22 years of experience in the extractive industry, implementing sustainable programs with complex operations in the mining, oil and gas sectors in North and South America. Currently, Gabriel is the Director of ESG & Climate Change at Ausenco. Gabriel has led multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, environmental, social, and scientific professionals to conduct major social-environmental assessments, corporate strategic executions, and ESG initiatives. Gabriel is an engineer by training and interdisciplinary by design. He adopts sustainability and interdisciplinary vision, as a strategy to improve processes and manage corporate risks, pursuing growth and adding value to business and society. In the field of climate change, he has experience leading climate projection studies, climate risk analysis and incorporation of climate adaptation strategies in mine closure plans.

Gabriel completes his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia, Canada, where he researched global strategies for climate risk management in the mining industry, sustainability, and water stewardship for mine closure and land restoration. He developed a novel assessment system for climate risk and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies.

Additionally, Gabriel is Director of Publications for the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Environmental and Social Responsibility Society (ESRS) and leads the Working Group on Environmental, Climate Change, Genomics and Mine Closure. At the same time, he is an Adjunct Professor at The University of British Columbia, teaching the course Water in Mining.
