George Pirie

George Pirie, Ontario’s Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth, has a wealth of industry and mining experience. Elected as Timmins MPP in 2022, George was appointed Minister of Mines, where he helped position Ontario as a global leader in critical minerals. In 2025, Premier Doug Ford entrusted him to the newly created role of Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth, reflecting George’s commitment to strengthening Northern Ontario communities and the immense opportunities in this region.

George is a graduate of Laurentian University and had a successful 35-year career as a senior mining executive before entering public life as Mayor of Timmins. George worked both in Canada and internationally, and also served on the boards of the Mining Association of Canada, the Ontario Mining Association, and as co-chair of the Ontario Mineral Industry Cluster Initiative.
