Julio Velarde
Chairman of the Board, Central Reserve Bank of Peru - BCRP
Julio Velarde has been Governor of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) since October 2006. In this capacity, he was named Central Banker of the Year for the Americas in 2022 and Global Central Banker of the Year in 2015 by FT’s The Banker, among other accolades. Previously he served as a member of the BCRP Board of Directors in 1990–92 and 2001–03. He also served as Chair of the BIS Advisory Council for the Americas (2018–20); Chair of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four on International Monetary Affairs and Development (G-24; 2018–19); Chair of the Board of the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA; 2007–09); and Executive Chair of the Latin American Reserve Fund (FLAR, 2004–06). Additionally, he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Universidad del Pacífico (UP; 2001–03). Governor Velarde holds an M.A. in Economics from Brown University, where he also pursued doctoral studies, and a B.A. in Economics from UP. He additionally pursued an advanced program in economics at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
